Geothermal energy is going to be the way to the future in heating and air conditiong, at least that’s my prediction. There are so many benefits to using a geothermal heat pump to cool or heat your home or business. While investing in a geothermal unit is initially more expensive than a traditional system, the annual savings on energy bills more than compensates for the initial output and you can usually expect full payback in three to five years. With efficiency ratings at least three times higher than other heating and cooling systems it is estimated that you can save between 30 to 70% on heating and cooling costs.
In addition to the long-term savings you will receive, these systems are extremely durable. Underground loops carry 25-50 year warranties. The pumps, safely located in the home, often last more than 20 years. These pumps last, and the require very little maintenance. According to a study from the GHPC (Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium), the costs of maintenance are about one-third that of conventional systems. The only work necessary involves some occasional cleaning of the heat exchanger and regularly changing air filters.
Finally, recent Congressional legislation has provided a 30% tax credit for the installed cost of a residential heat pump system, no cap.
I’ve highlighted a few of the tremendous benefits of geothermal heat pumps. There really has never been a better time to invest in geothermal technology to heat and cool your home.
